₹27,548 Crore Pharma Giant Cipla Enters Weight Management Battle as Obesity Demand Surges

ECHEMI 2025-07-16

Cipla is making a bold move into India’s booming weight management sector, responding to a sharp rise in demand for effective obesity solutions amid intensifying global competition. Managing Director and Global CEO Umang Vohra announced the new strategy in the company’s latest annual report, emphasizing Cipla’s commitment to delivering innovative therapies and reducing stigma around obesity.

Cipla’s entry comes as global heavyweights like Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk have already launched anti-obesity drugs Mounjaro and Wegovy in India, fueling a competitive race in this high-growth space. Several Indian pharma firms are racing to develop weight loss drugs as the market for obesity and diabetes care expands rapidly.

In addition to its obesity ambitions, Cipla is strengthening its CNS (central nervous system) portfolio, having successfully in-licensed Sanofi’s India CNS range, including the top anti-epileptic brand Frisium. The company is eyeing further deals in areas such as ADHD and Parkinson’s disease, while also ramping up efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance with four innovative products under development.

For FY25, Cipla achieved consolidated revenue of ₹27,548 crore and net profit of ₹5,272 crore. With strong financials and a patient-centric approach, Cipla aims to lead India’s next wave of healthcare innovation, investing in big brands, digital infrastructure, and strategic alliances.
