Röhm Shuts 150,000-Ton MMA Plant in Louisiana as 250,000-Ton Bay City Facility Ramps Up Prices Fall 14.5 Percent

ECHEMI 2025-07-17

Röhm Group has confirmed the closure of its 150,000-ton methyl methacrylate (MMA) plant in Westwego, Louisiana at the end of June, following the start-up of its new 250,000-ton facility in Bay City, Texas. This move is part of a strategic shift to optimize production and reduce reliance on older, higher-cost assets.

The Bay City plant features the innovative LiMA process, which delivers higher yields and significantly lowers CO₂ emissions compared to conventional technologies. Röhm aims to maximize output at Bay City while scaling back or idling other plants as necessary. Products from the new facility will supply both the US and European markets via swaps or shipping.

Since Bay City’s commercial launch in mid-May, spot MMA prices have dropped about 14.5%, with experts attributing the decline to the influx of new capacity.
