Hengrui Strikes $500 Million Global Drug Deal with GSK Potential Payouts Up to $12 Billion

ECHEMI 2025-07-30

Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals has signed a major licensing agreement, granting GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) worldwide rights to its HRS-9821 drug and 11 additional programs for an upfront payment of $500 million. If all development and sales milestones are reached, Hengrui could receive as much as $12 billion in total.

HRS-9821 is currently in development for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), while the other assets span early-stage projects in oncology, respiratory, immunology, and inflammation. News of the deal sent Hengrui’s Shanghai-listed shares up 6.6% and its Hong Kong shares soaring 8.5%, far outperforming local indices.

This blockbuster partnership highlights the increasing global footprint of Chinese pharmaceutical innovation and brings Hengrui one step closer to international markets.
