Sumitomo Chemical Unveils Breakthrough Pilot Plant for Direct Propylene from Ethanol Green Hydrogen as Byproduct
Sumitomo Chemical has announced the successful launch of a pilot facility featuring its proprietary technology to convert ethanol directly into propylene—eliminating the need for intermediate products like ethylene. This pioneering process could reshape the petrochemical feedstock landscape and is poised to influence the plastics industry’s future.
Unlike conventional Japanese production, which relies heavily on fossil-based naphtha, Sumitomo’s new approach streamlines manufacturing and reduces costs by making propylene in a single step. The innovation also generates hydrogen as a valuable byproduct. If bio-ethanol is used, the resulting hydrogen is renewable, opening new doors for clean energy production.
Ethanol’s versatility as a raw material means it can be sourced from sugarcane, corn, pulp, and even combustible waste—offering a clear sustainability advantage over traditional feedstocks. As industrial production of ethanol from waste nears reality, the significance of ethanol as a green petrochemical alternative is rapidly increasing.
