Australia New Zealand Approve GM Enzyme Stevia Sweetener From China for Food Use
On August 14, 2025, the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Authority approved a new sweetener produced using a genetically modified bacterial strain. The steviol glycosides, developed by Sichuan Yingjia Hesheng Technology, are created through an enzymatic process using enzymes derived from genetically engineered E. coli.
This innovative sweetener is now permitted as a food additive, marking a milestone for biotech-based sugar alternatives in the region. The approval signals growing acceptance of advanced fermentation and enzyme technology in the global food industry.
