Global Butadiene Market Faces Heavy Headwinds as Supply Surge Outpaces Demand
Industry sentiment toward the global butadiene market for the final four months of 2025 is decidedly bearish, with rising supply from refinery restarts and new capacity overshadowing fragile demand recovery. Traders are increasingly shifting cargoes from Europe and the U.S. to Asia, where prices remain higher, though the arbitrage window is narrowing.
Supply Shock Builds
Global prices have already weakened this year, but European producers restarting idle units are adding to the glut. TotalEnergies’ Gonfreville butadiene unit in France and Dow’s Boehlen plant in Germany have both resumed operations, pressuring supply. Data from S&P Global Commodity Insights show the price spread between Rotterdam and China averaged $270.50/ton in H1 2025, incentivizing flows eastward.
Yet even Asia, traditionally the price leader, faces oversupply. Lotte Chemical’s new cracker in Indonesia, which came online in late May, adds a 140,000 t/y butadiene unit, while ExxonMobil’s new Huizhou ethylene complex in China began operations in July. Additional plants across the region are due to restart after maintenance, further swelling supply.
On the demand side, China’s tire exports to Europe remain weak, dampened by the EU’s anti-dumping probe launched in May. This undercuts one of the region’s key outlets for butadiene-derived synthetic rubber.
Spreads Narrowing Across Feedstocks
The price gap between butadiene and feedstock naphtha is also expected to compress as Asian markets weaken. In H1 2025, the China–Japan butadiene-naphtha spread averaged $641.17/ton, but S&P Global’s Anthony Tso forecasts it could shrink to $400/ton in H2.
U.S. Market: Supply Rising, Exports Limited
In the U.S., supply is poised to grow as refinery maintenance ends. A U.S. buyer noted that “at least two cargoes per quarter” will be available for the rest of the year, but weak overseas prices and closed arbitrage windows are keeping most barrels in the domestic market. Average Gulf Coast butadiene prices in H1 2025 stood at 43.88 cents/lb ($966.32/ton), down 15.7% from H2 2024. Sources suggest only if prices fall below 30 cents/lb will producers boost exports significantly.
Europe: Weakness Persists
Europe remains mired in sluggish demand. Traders are tracking two cargoes loaded in late August bound for Asia, but summer run-cuts have only managed to stabilize supply, not rebalance the market. Even with several downstream maintenance turnarounds scheduled, insiders believe the impact on fundamentals will be minimal. With demand only set for a slow pickup after the holiday season, the European market is expected to stay weak well into Q4.
Outlook
Globally, the picture is clear: butadiene markets are oversupplied from East to West, with only Asia offering temporary relief via arbitrage. But as new Asian units ramp up and spreads contract, that outlet is closing. Unless demand rebounds sharply—particularly in synthetic rubber and tire exports—the butadiene sector will likely remain stuck in a depressed cycle through the end of 2025.
Bottom line: The world’s butadiene producers face a paradox of plenty—more capacity, lower margins, and fewer profitable outlets. The market’s imbalance is structural, not seasonal.
