BASF and Zhejiang University Forge Innovation Partnership

ECHEMI 2025-09-19

On September 12, BASF signed a strategic innovation cooperation agreement with Zhejiang University’s Quzhou Institute to advance sustainable materials and processes. The partnership will focus on advanced materials, industrial ecology, molecular manufacturing, and bio-based chemicals. Both sides will cooperate on key technology R&D, pilot trials, analytical testing, and talent development.

The Quzhou Institute, established in 2018, has built collaborative platforms with major Chinese companies including Xingfa Group, Hangyang, Juhua Group, and Konbond Pharma, while also establishing a bio-based chemicals research unit. The signing also carried symbolic value as BASF Greater China Chairman Dr. Jianfeng Lou is an alumnus of Zhejiang University.

This latest collaboration follows BASF’s growing footprint in sustainable innovation, including a joint lab for biodegradable lubricants with Shandong Marine Science Institute in 2024 and earlier collaborations with South China University of Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. BASF has positioned itself as a pioneer in bio-based and sustainable materials, reinforcing its leadership in decarbonization and green chemistry.
