Sherwin-Williams Completes Acquisition of BASF's Decorative Paints Business in Brazil for $1.15 Billion
The sale of BASF's decorative paints business in Brazil to Sherwin-Williams closed on October 1, 2025, following approval by the relevant Brazilian competition authorities at the end of August 2025. The purchase price was $1.15 billion on a cash and debt-free basis.
The transaction includes BASF's production sites in Demachi and Yabo Atang, related contracts, the Suvinil and Glasu! brands, and approximately 1,000 employees. The decorative paints business is BASF's only sizable B2C business, with sales of approximately $525 million (€485 million) in 2024. It boasts a broad portfolio of coatings and paint preparation products, as well as digital solutions. Operating almost entirely in Brazil, the business has limited synergies with BASF's other coatings businesses.
“This transaction exemplifies how we are rapidly creating value through active portfolio management as part of BASF’s ‘Winning Way’ strategy,” said Anup Kothari, Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE and Head of the Coatings division.
“We are confident that the decorative paints business will continue to thrive under Sherwin-Williams’ leadership. We wish all employees at this leading coatings company the best as they build Suvinil into the most recognized decorative paints brand in Brazil.”
