South Africa's main port system suffers hacking attacks, port freight has to be delayed

ECHEMI 2021-07-28

According to a South African media report on July 27, local time, South Africa's state-owned logistics company (Transnet) stated that its main port’s IT system has suffered cyber attacks in the past week, which has had a huge impact on port container transportation.

At present, some container ships scheduled to call at Cape Town and Durban have been transferred to ports of neighboring countries to load and unload cargo, such as the ports of Mozambique, the neighboring country of South Africa. This will result in cargo owners on container ships having to wait a long time to receive the ordered goods.

In the future, the shortage of some commodities in the South African market due to the riots will further intensify, and a large amount of exported minerals will not be able to be shipped out. South Africa's state-owned logistics company said on the 27th that the related port and terminal issues are expected to be resolved soon, but it did not provide a timetable or details of the reasons.

The riots that have just ended have stopped many ports in South Africa. The system breakdown will not only increase the shortage of some commodities in South Africa, but will also further hit the country’s economic recovery under the epidemic.
