How Is The Manufacturing Process of Baking Soda
In the manufacturing process of baking soda, molecules of carbon C, sodium Na, hydrogen H, and oxygen O are combined to obtain a substance of the salt type, whose chemical formula is NaHCO3.
This substance has certain properties and characteristics such as its whitish appearance, its melting point which is 323.15 ℃, it has an acid pH of 10.3292 pKa, and a density of 2.173 g/cm3;
Raw materials used in the manufacturing process of baking soda
Baking soda is obtained in different ways, one of them is by crystallization in aqueous solution from its Na+ (ac)+ HCO3 - (ac) ions to obtain NaHCO3.
Another manufacturing process of baking soda is known as the Solvay method, which is a chemical process that is carried out in a continuous way, and is used at industrial level for the mass production of sodium carbonate and baking soda. This way of obtaining the substance is initially based on the production of CO2, carbon dioxide, which is obtained through a process in which limestones are subjected to very high temperatures.
The development of the Solvay method continues with the preparation of brines, these are saturated solutions of the substance called sodium chloride, NaCl, this is nothing more than the common salt we know, then this salt is subjected to reactions with ammonia, NH3, and carbon dioxide that has been generated at the beginning of the process.
In this way the expected product, baking soda, NaHCO3, is generated, and on the other hand another product called ammonium chloride, NH4Cl, is obtained, and thus, to finish the process, the separation of the baking soda proceeds through established filtration procedures, and then another method for obtaining sodium carbonate, NaCO, in which the product is calcined to achieve the carbonate.
Other manufacturing process of baking soda.
In other processes used to obtain baking soda, they are made from metalliferous minerals, using electrodialysis processes, where the solutions are exposed to the action of cationic membranes, which are located in delimited compartments, the most basic compartments are separated by anionic faces of bipolar membranes on one side, and by cationic membranes on the other side, thus extracting a solution that is composed of baking soda.
Uses of the product obtained in the manufacturing process of baking soda
The compound obtained in this manufacturing process is a white crystalline substance, which dissolves easily in water, and has an infinite number of applications in various areas, such as cooking, cleaning, gardening, hygiene, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fire-fighting, pest control, etc.
In the food industry, baking soda is widely used, because of its properties it is ideal to fulfill many functions. In the baking industry it is used to optimize flours, sugar, butter, eggs and other ingredients used in the preparation of baked goods.
The chemical reactions produced by baking soda give the dough a significant growth, which provides great benefits to the manufacturers, and a great quality to the finished products.
In the cosmetic and personal care industry, it is used for skin care products, bath salts, deodorants, etc.
In the cleaning industry it is used in detergents, degreasing agents, pipe openers, and in the pharmaceutical industry it has many applications in products for the well-being of people, such as antacids, and dental care, and is also used in pest control products such as insect repellents.
