When graphene triggered a revolution in high-tech and new materials, a heat of graphene emerged in the paint industry. Compared with previous years, the study of graphene application in coatings is more rational. With a lot of previous studies, future generations have more grasp on how to modify and apply this super material. Several articles on graphene have been selected for readers'reference in this issue. Zhang Haiyong and others introduced the structure, properties and anticorrosive mechanism of graphene in the form of a review. The preparation methods of graphene anticorrosive film and the research situation of graphene as filler in polymer anticorrosive coatings in recent years were summarized. On this basis, the application problems of graphene in anti-corrosion are discussed in detail, including the defects in the preparation of graphene film, the non-uniform dispersion of graphene in organic polymers and the local micro-current corrosion when the coating is damaged, and the corresponding solutions are put forward. The effect of graphene oxidation degree and content on the corrosion resistance of water-borne zinc powder coatings was investigated by Chen Zhonghua et al. The experimental results show that the addition of graphene oxide can effectively retard the corrosion of steel. When the oxidation degree of graphene oxide is small, the oxygen group is small and there is no carboxyl group, the corrosion resistance of the coating is improved. Zhang Honghui et al. prepared graphene modified solventless epoxy anticorrosive coatings for underwater construction from practical application. It is expected to play an important role in the maintenance and leak plugging of underwater structures and ships, as well as in the maintenance and new construction of large-scale facilities in harsh environments such as high temperature, high humidity and rust removal.
Functionalization and high performance will still be the general trend of coatings development. The articles published in this journal mainly focus on the research and application of functional coatings, such as high ultraviolet reflective pigments and thermal control coatings, Gypsum Veneer polystyrene board, marine antifouling coatings based on natural products, Chloroether resins, water-borne self-drying anti-corrosion coatings for cast iron workpieces, and coatings for glass fibre fabrics.
