New PC/PBT Blend Has High Impact Strength, Reduces Warpage Tendency

ECHEMI 2022-03-21

The German company Romira has developed a PC/PBT blend with exceptionally high impact strength, reduced warpage tendency and improved UV stability. Among them, Romiloy EXP3008 shows very good performance in UV resistance.

PC/PBT blends are building materials that combine the advantages of amorphous polycarbonate (PC) and crystalline polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). PC provides impact strength and dimensional stability, while PBT adds chemical resistance and stiffness to the blend.

The new blend Romiloy EXP3008 not only has better chemical resistance (to fuels, greases and many cleaners), high dimensional stability and UV resistance, but also has a particularly high impact strength, making it particularly suitable for high Parts required.

In many applications, only flame retardant plastics are permitted. Halogenated compounds are the most commonly used main ingredients. The main disadvantages of these compounds include the release of highly toxic dioxins in the event of a fire and, due to the higher concentrations required, a possible loss of mechanical properties and migration of additives to surfaces. In addition, the necessary synergists can catalyze various degradation reactions of the polymer.

Romira has successfully added another product to its portfolio of halogen-free PC blends through improved formulations and processes. Romiloy 7410 is a rubber-modified PC compound with a fire resistance rating of 1.5 mm UL V0. Its mechanical properties are significantly improved, especially notched impact strength, as well as high UV and temperature resistance. The optimized concentration of the modified flame retardant packaging also prevents migration and the resulting loss of surface quality.

These products can be used in both outdoor and indoor applications. For example, the electrical and electronics industry, consumer goods and medical technology.
