Mitsui Chemicals, Teijin Collaborate to Produce Bio-based BPA and PC

ECHEMI 2022-08-30

Recently, Mitsui Chemicals and Teijin jointly announced that the two companies will cooperate to produce bisphenol A (BPA) and polycarbonate (PC) resins from biomass feedstocks to support the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during the product life cycle. Carbon neutral.

The decision was initiated after Mitsui Chemicals obtained the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus certification. Based on ISCC Plus certification, Mitsui Chemicals will start supplying biomass BPA. Teijin said the company will procure biomass BPA from Mitsui to produce PC resins from biomass feedstocks with the same physical properties as the company's existing petroleum feedstock PC, which will be used in numerous commercial applications such as automotive headlights and electronic components.

In addition, Mitsui Chemicals and Teijin plan to develop and produce more environmentally friendly products throughout the supply chain, based on the cooperative production of biomass BPA and PC. Mitsui Chemicals is considering expanding its sourcing network for bio-based hydrocarbon products to provide the market with a stable supply of related products. The company has achieved ISCC Plus certification for phenol, acetone and alpha-methyl styrene, and is aiming to achieve ISCC Plus certification for all of the company's phenol chain products, to begin sales in the fiscal year ending March 2024. Teijin hopes to obtain ISCC Plus certification in the first half of the same fiscal year to start commercial production of biomass-based PC resin.
