By 2025, China's New Materials Will Achieve 10 Trillion, The Absolute Explosion Of These Three Directions

In 2021, the total output value of China's new materials is expected to exceed 7 trillion yuan. The total output value of new materials industry is expected to reach 10 trillion in 2025.

The industrial structure is mainly distributed by special functional materials, modern polymer materials and high-end metal structure materials, accounting for 32%, 24% and 19% respectively.

The new materials industry has a significant agglomeration effect, and the geographical distribution of the subdivision direction has its own focus. Four provinces, namely Jiangsu, Shandong, Zhejiang and Guangdong, have a new energy scale of over 100 billion yuan. Fujian, Anhui and Hubei are the next largest, with a scale of over 500 billion.

The Yangtze River Delta new materials industry focuses on new energy vehicles, biology, electronics and other fields, while the Pearl River Delta focuses on the research and development of high-performance composite materials, and the Bohai Sea region places more emphasis on special materials and cutting-edge materials.

With the support of national policies for new materials and their downstream products in aerospace, military, consumer electronics, automotive electronics, photovoltaic electronics and biomedical fields, the market demand is expanding and the requirements for product performance continue to rise, resulting in a dramatic expansion of the industrial scale of new materials enterprises and increasing demands on the R&D capabilities of enterprises and researchers.

Downstream industries such as consumer electronics, new energy, semiconductors and carbon fibres are accelerating their shift to the domestic market, and the need for localisation of new materials is urgent.

Investment in China's new materials sector increased significantly between 2013 and 2017, before falling back.

The reasons for this are the high technical barriers to the development of high-end materials, long R&D cycles, large capital requirements and the difficulty in highlighting cost advantages.

The launch of the Science and Innovation Board is supporting a number of start-up new materials enterprises, opening up their financing channels and encouraging them to increase their R&D and innovation, thereby promoting the transformation and upgrading of the industry as a whole.
