While many laundering methods effectively restore the quality of fibers after they have been laundered, some are more effective than others.

Mercerizing

Mercerization is a chemical process used to treat textiles, most commonly cotton or wool. The result of mercerization can be a tougher and smoother fabric that is more resistant to abrasion, shrinking and mildew. Mercerizing agents have synthesized compounds with a high molecular weight. These compounds are added to the textile during the dyeing stage and then rinsed away after their chemical reaction has been finished. Usually, light steaming will speed up this process.
