Get to Know Why Making Chlorine Dioxide Solution is a Good Idea

Making chlorine dioxide solution can be a complicated process if you are not familiar with the techniques. Chlorine dioxide is a strong oxidizing agent that can be used to purify water and other liquids. It's safe to add to water and doesn't alter its taste or smell much. Oxygen also acts as an oxidizing agent but it is more reactive and short-lived, so chlorine dioxide is preferred when disinfecting food or water in containers of limited volume (e.g., bottles).Steps to follow;

1. Start with a bottle of 2% food grade hydrogen peroxide. You can find this in the health food section of most grocery stores.

2. Mix 10 drops of 3% sodium chlorite solution into your peroxide (e.g., 10 drops x 16 oz = approx 1 teaspoon). Stir with a sterile spoon or shake well in a sealed container to mix thoroughly. The resulting solution will be used immediately so measure your desired amount first before mixing ingredients together.

3. Keep the solution in a dark colored glass container, preferably one that you can seal once you put the lid on to keep it fresh and free from outside light sources and contaminants. Discard any remaining solution after you have used it.

4. If you are going to use the solution for disinfecting drinking water, it is best to use a glass container or BPA free plastic bottle that will not leach chemicals into your water. The chlorine dioxide solution does not stain plastic and can be used safely in most containers that contain liquids.

5. Add the disinfected water to your storage bottles slowly and shake well before each addition (ensure there is no chlorine taste or odor by shaking first). This way you don't create a foam when adding liquid to your containers which could interfere with the seal and cause contamination of your stored water.

6. Use your chlorine dioxide solution within 48 hours of making it to ensure it is as effective as possible.

Uses of chlorine dioxide solution

1. Creating safe drinking water:

Water that has been contaminated by chemical, biological, or radioactive pollutants can be purified by adding chlorine dioxide solution. This is enough reason why making chlorine dioxide solution is good idea. The chlorine dioxide can attack and eliminate harmful pollutants like mercury and thallium (toxic heavy metals) without altering the taste or smell of the water. Chlorine dioxide is also a powerful immune system booster and is used to treat asthma and other infections that are caused from immune weakness.

2. Cleaning fruits:

Chlorinated fruit has long been a problem for people with weak immune systems because it contains harmful chemicals like chlorine that lead to illness later on down the road (e.g., asthma or cancer). Chlorine dioxide can be used to clean dirty fruits and vegetables that may have come in contact with pesticides or other chemicals. Fruit (e.g., apples, bananas) have a thin skin that is easily penetrated by chlorine dioxide and the liquid remains close to the inside of the fruit rather than evaporating quickly into the air. Other produce (e.g., carrots, lettuce) may need to be rinsed or soaked in water for about 10 minutes before being sprayed with a solution of chlorine dioxide for best results.

3. Drinking water storage:

When making an emergency water supply, you should consider using bottled spring water if it is available. Remember, however, that bottled spring water is only as clean as the source of it. Tap water is usually tested and regulated, but you can never be sure about your sources. Instead of relying on bottled water for emergency drinking supplies, consider using chlorine dioxide solution to purify your own drinking supply. This can be a good way to avoid using bottled water unless you are forced to do so by an emergency (e.g., power outage or other catastrophe). When making a 2% solution of chlorine dioxide, one bottle will equal approximately 2 gallons of disinfected water when stored in containers meant for long-term storage such as glass bottles or hard plastic containers with locking lids.

4. Cleaning home appliances:

As mentioned previously, chlorine dioxide is a very safe form of chlorine that does not cause harm to the environment and does not cause cancer. This is another reason why making chlorine dioxide solution is important. It can be used safely to clean your kitchen appliances, bathrooms, and showers by adding a 1% solution of chlorine dioxide to a spray bottle or bucket. You should wear protective gear including goggles and gloves when using any type of cleaning product (including chlorine dioxide) around your home. Read the labels on any product you buy to ensure it is safe before using it.
