Trinseo Launches New Energy-saving and Carbon-reducing ABS Resin with Biological Content as High as 80%

ECHEMI 2022-05-09

It is reported that plastic and latex adhesive manufacturer Trinseo has recently launched a more sustainable MAGNUM ABS resin, which is planned to be used in automotive applications.

During polymerization, fossil-based polymers are combined with renewable raw materials according to a mass balance process, according to the ISCC mass balance method, resulting in MAGNUM BIO ABS resins with a biological content of up to 80%.

Trinseo uses second-generation wastes, such as waste kitchen oil and pulp industry residues, which do not compete with the food chain and comply with sustainable food requirements. Since renewable feedstocks have the same chemical composition as fossil feedstocks during feedstock cracking, separation is not required during manufacturing.

It is reported that MAGNUM BIO ABS resin is structurally and functionally identical to fossil materials, and can be used with existing tools and equipment under the same processing conditions without requalification, while providing lower carbon dioxide emissions.

"The launch of MAGNUM BIO ABS resin further expands our commitment to the automotive industry with a portfolio of sustainable advantageous materials, and following the successful market launch of our PULSE GX ECO range of PC/ABS products, we are delighted to offer our automotive customers more solutions to help them achieve their sustainability goals,” said Frank Schumann, global marketing manager at TRW.

As a one-off solution, MAGNUM BIO ABS resin does not require requalification and the material will maintain the same properties and benefits, effectively improving the carbon footprint.
