Get to Know the Steps of Copper Sulfate Solution Preparation
Copper sulfate solution preparation is the process of preparing a solution of copper sulfate. This process can be done easily and with the help of certain techniques. In order to make a copper sulfate solution. Copper sulfate solution is the solution of about 0.5% to 3% by weight of copper sulfate in water. This solution is also known as the milliequivalent(mEq/L) of copper oxide.
How to prepare copper sulfate solution
1. Step 1
The 1st step of copper sulfate solution preparation is put to boil distilled water in a pot either by using a gas stove or an electric stove. Distilled water is free of any contaminants and it makes the solution clear. Add 4-grams(4g)of copper sulfate for each liter of distilled water.
2. Step 2
Decrease the heat when it boils, make sure it does not reach the overheated stage. After that pour a small amount of copper sulfate solution into a test tube containing distilled water until half full. Now filter by using clean filter paper and securely fasten it to the test tube with tape. The remaining copper sulfate solution should be saved for future use if any.
3. Step 3
When the copper sulfate solution thickens, it is ready to be used. If the copper sulfate solution has no color and it is transparent, then it is considered to be pure. The impurity in this copper sulfate solution comes from some other minerals which have a different chemical formula than copper (check Wikipedia for more details). An example of impurities is iron ore(Fe) which makes the color of the copper sulfate solution dark yellow or orange in color instead of grayish white. This kind of impurities also shows up on bronze statues after the polishing process. So, to test its quality make sure that pure copper(Cu) can be dissolved when cooled with water. This process can be done only by a trained chemist.
4. Step 4
The copper sulfate solution obtained in step 3 can be used for the preparation of different kinds of copper chloride solutions and their related product. Copper sulfate solution is prepared on a regular basis, it is stored at room temperature from where it can be used later in case of urgent need. It is recommended that the container should be tightly closed to prevent loss of the product if there is any leakage into the environment. This can happen when handling without gloves as well as keeping an open container in its original form. In case you are planning to use pure copper(Cu) for general application. Different applications of Copper sulfate solution
1. Electroplating
Electroplating is a manufacturing process of making sheet metal and some other types of objects. In this process, copper(Cu) is used as an electroplating agent which can be made by using copper sulfate solution and a solution of copper chloride. The basic idea of this application is that the two solutions which are mixed together will produce ions with higher concentration (higher molar concentration) than pure water. When these ions are accelerated in the opposite direction to each other, they are very similar to electrical charges. As we have said that copper sulfate solution is prepared by adding copper sulfate to distilled water, so it must be cooled down. This will help in the formation of copper chloride ions. This is one reason why you should prefer copper sulfate solution preparation.
2. Preparation of copper chloride solution
A copper sulfate solution is a kind of copper chloride(CuCl2) solution. To prepare these ions, dry copper sulfate should be added to distilled water which can be cooled down. Copper sulfate dissolves in water and then produces ions. These ions are very similar to electrical charges and when they are accelerated in opposite directions, they will create an impact and become one single molecule with a higher density than pure water. By doing this, we can make a cold solid or liquid by mixing the two chemicals. Now you might ask how can I make a pure Copper(Cu) solution out of this product. It is very simple and easy to be done on the production line.
3. Preparation of potassium-copper chlorate(II)
This is a chemical reaction in which, copper sulfate solution and potassium chlorate solutions react with each other to form potassium-copper chlorate(II). Potassium chlorate is an oxidizing agent, on the other hand, copper sulfate is a reducing agent.
In conclusion, the principle of this chemical reaction is that Copper sulfate solution + Potassium chlorate will produce potassium-copper chlorate(II).
