Chemical processing of textile materials is the use of chemicals for the transformation of raw materials into usable textiles. The textile industry is one of the largest consumers of chemicals and research has been carried out with a view to reducing this dependency on chemical processing.

Lubricants can be used to keep clothing clean and this reduces the need for washing machines that would inevitably use up water and electricity. This can help reduce pollution and the dependence on fossil fuels that are used for this purpose.

3. Improved efficiency of materials.

The use of chemical processing can improve the properties of textile materials and this would further reduce the need for washing or replacement of clothing due to wear and tear. It has also been argued that if clothing is not exposed to the elements it will last longer thereby reducing disposal

Disadvantages

1. Environmental damage.

Chemical processing of textile materials and the use of lubricants can involve large amounts chemicals and can pollute the environment if not handled or disposed of properly. Toxic substances like heavy metals and chromium are used in industrial processes as a means of binding dyes to textiles, protecting fibers from damage and increasing their flexibility. However, these substances are harmful to the environment and pose a health risk to workers and nearby communities. Methods for disposing toxic waste from textile manufacturing processes must be improved to protect the environment from further damage

2. Health risks for workers.

The presence of toxic substances in large amounts can pose a health risk to workers but there are no current standards in place to regulate the amount of chemicals used or the waste they produce. Large quantities of chromium released into air that is not filtered out and can be fatal if inhaled. If a worker is exposed to harmful chemicals it can also lead to long-term health problems. Chemical processing of textile materials have lots of benefits.

3. Zero waste and pollution potential.

Some textile manufacturing processes can produce large amounts of waste material that must be disposed of properly. For example, the treatment of cotton and linen by spinning can produce large amounts of waste fibers that are either reused or recycled. In turn this will allow increased productivity, cheaper uniforms and a safer work environment.
