BP Linde launches low-carbon hydrogen production project in US

ECHEMI 2022-06-07

BP and Linde have announced plans to advance a large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the US state of Texas that will enable the production of low-carbon hydrogen at Linde's existing facilities. The development will also support storage of carbon dioxide captured from other industrial facilities, paving the way for large-scale decarbonization of the Texas Gulf Coast industrial corridor.

It is reported that the overall development project is expected to be put into use as early as 2026. The project will also capture and store CO2 from other large industrial facilities in the region, eventually storing up to 15 million tonnes of CO2 per year at multiple onshore geological storage sites, equivalent to taking about 3 million cars off the road each year. When complete, the project will capture and store carbon dioxide from Linde's hydrogen production facility in the greater Houston area, as well as from its other facilities in Texas to produce low-carbon hydrogen for the region. This low-carbon hydrogen will be sold to customers along with Linde's hydrogen pipeline network, with long-term contracts with customers to produce low-carbon chemicals and fuels.

Linde said it will use its proprietary technology and operational expertise to capture and compress carbon dioxide from its hydrogen production facility for the project. The project will enable Linde to provide cost-effective, reliable low-carbon hydrogen products and, together with BP, carbon capture and storage solutions.
