How do acids dissolve in water

The answer is acids and bases dissolve in water depending on which compound you are referring to. When an acid dissolves in water, it breaks down into its component ions. So, when you dissolve a sodium hydroxide solution of 10% sodium hydroxide, it will produce a solution of 50% sodium ions and the remainder will be hydrogen ions. In contrast, the dissolution of calcium hydroxide produces a solution of 35% calcium ion and 65% hydrogen ion and potassium acid produces a solution containing 15% potassium ion with 77% hydrogen ion.
How to mix acids and water

This may seem counter-intuitive, but adding the acid first makes it easier to dissolve because the acid and water will react with each other, creating a whole new mixture with a pH of less than 7. Thus, when you add a solution of 10% sodium hydroxide to water, most of the sodium ions will dissolve and you won't get hydrogen ions. To get hydrogen ions into your solution, you must add base to the water.
2.Filter out insoluble salts
The problem is if you don't filter out any salts from your water then that's all that ends up in the solution and floats on the top. So you could take any base and add it to a solution of water and salt, but you won't get any ions in your solution. To avoid this, a good rule of thumb is to filter out the insoluble salts before adding base. To remove the insoluble salts, use a Buchner funnel with a coffee filter inside of it. This will remove the insoluble salts and leave behind only the soluble river that contains ions.
3.Increase pH
When acids mix with water, they increase the amount of hydrogen ions in the solution. Hydrogen ions are denoted as H+ so if there is an excess of hydrogen ions then there must be a deficit in hydroxide ions (OH-). If the pH is too high, then the solution becomes acidic. The pH scale is logarithmic so that any change in pH of one unit means a 10 fold increase for every new unit you increment. 4.Increase temperature
If you increase temperature then it will increase the speed at which water dissociates into ions and salts. Thus increasing temperature will result in faster dissociation of water into ionic components. If you increase the temperature of your water by 2 degrees Celsius then you will end up dissolving double the amount of acid.
5.Increase volume
Adding the same amount of a base to the same volume of water will result in less hydroxide ions being produced. Lets say that you took 0.1 grams of 10% sodium hydroxide and added it to 100 grams of water, you end up with a solution concentration of 0.1 mols/liter and a pH of 11. Now if you were to add another 0.1 grams of sodium hydroxide to another 10 grams and 100 grams of water then there would be twice as much base but in the same volume as before resulting in a solution concentration half as much as before and pH 12.
