What is the role of pH in paper industry? pH is the abbreviation for "power of hydrogen" and is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution. The exact meaning varies, depending on the context in which it is used, but in the paper industry it refers to how acidic or basic water is. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 with 7 being neutral. A pH lower than 7 means that something is more acidic and more difficult for bacteria and other micro-organisms to survive in. A higher pH means something has become more alkaline and easier for bacteria and other micro-organisms to survive in.

The role of pH in paper industry is to determine the amount of acidity or alkalinity which favours the growth and survival of microorganisms. Various papers react to water with different levels of acidity or alkalinity. These reactions cause the various stages of manufacturing process to be affected and thus, it is necessary to study different stages of what is happening in order for paper manufacturing companies to maintain their quality standards.

 

Paper specifications

 

Paper manufacturers set out some specific guidelines for the paper industry, including how water is used. For example, water that has been used for bleaching underground sand typically has a pH between 7.5 and 8.5 . Water used for washing or making pulp has a pH that is between 5.5 and 7.5, for slurry and washing up to 8.0, for cooking before, during and after the pulp stage, between 6.0 and 8.0 ,and washing water should remain between 7 and 9. The reason behind these ranges is because different types of paper react differently to each pH range.

 

Milling process

 

This first step in the process involves mixing the fibers of wood with water taken from the mixing tank to form a slurry which is then pushed through screens that have different sizes of holes cut in them (these holes allow only certain sized fibers to pass through). The water that is used in this process has a pH between 6.5 and 7.0 because a higher pH produces smaller fibers and a lower pH produces larger fibers.

 

Cooking process

 

Next, the fiber slurry is cooked in a vat to loosen the fibers and make them more flexible so they are easily separated from each other in the screening process. The cooking process requires alkaline water with a pH between 7 and 10. If the cooking tank were to be filled with acidic water (with a lower pH) then it would destroy the lignin structure of the wood material which means that paper will not come out white.

 

Cleaning process

 

This stage is carried out by adding sulfuric acid to the cooking tank. There is no water in this stage, so the water from the washing and washing up process does not need to be changed (although ash may be taken out of the boiling tank for reusing). The brewing of acid into a solution is done with a pH of 2 and as such, it is necessary that there are no ions in the solution which would cause problems.

 

Washing up process

 

The next step involves putting pulp into tanks that contain water, which contains calcium hydroxide. This process raises the pH of the water to a range between 5.5 and 8.0 (because of the reaction).

 

Bleaching process

 

The bleaching process involves putting the white pulp into a solution which has a pH of about 9. The higher amount of hydrogen in this solution easily removes any remaining pigments, tannin and lignin from the pulp which helps to create a paper that is very white in color. This process requires water with a pH between 10 and 11, otherwise no bleaching will take place and therefore, paper would not be very white in color.

 

The last step is to wash up again. The effluent from bleaching is flushed with water and then it is put back into the process again. The pH of the water should be between 6 and 8.

However, it is a factor which needs to be taken into account when manufacturing pulp mills. It is important that because of changes in pH, paper mills need to change their business models so as to remain competitive.
