Coating Import and Export Volume Increased in Q1-3, 2017

Introduction: The import volume and export volume of China’s coating increased from January to September 2017. Meanwhile, the production of coating increased stably supported by the growth of water-based coatings.

From January to September 2017, the import volume was 137,829mt, up 8.7% year on year. The export volume of coating was 1,515,300kt, up 14.6% year on year. Guangdong exported 58,543mt of coatings, which ranked the first place. The export volume of Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang and Liaoning was 28,101mt, 23,810mt, 9,696mt and 9,557mt. As for import, Shanghai imported 33,848mt of coatings, ranking the first. The import volume of Guangdong, Jiangsu, Beijing, Shandong was 31,267mt, 25,464mt, 10,923mt and 10,113mt.

Import and export of coatings mainly relied on the ports, which mainly locates in eastern coastal. From the import and export value, the total value of imported coatings was 757 million dollars from January to September 2017, which was up 0.2%. The total export value was 499 million dollars, up 5.9% from last year. China mainly imports high-end products, and exported low-end products. The quality of Chinese-made coatings should improve.

The output of China’s coatings keeps increasing. With the improvement of environmental awareness, the demand for environmental coatings has boomed. According to ECHEMI’s data, the number of environmental coating producers has reached 20,000 in 2017, and the newly-added capacity is around 2 million mt. Stimulated by the development of water-based coatings, the coating industry is getting on the right track.
