Vesicular beetle dermatitis
Blistering beetle dermatitis is most commonly caused by contact with the following three types of beetles. Beetles from the Meloidae and Oedemeridae families cause skin lesions by releasing a blistering agent, cantharidin, which is abundant in the beetles; the third type of blistering beetle dermatitis is caused by paederus from the staphyhinidae family, which contains another blistering agent, cape toxin. None of these beetles bite humans, but when they stay on the human skin, the blistering venom in their bodies flows out and contaminates the skin when the insect body is damaged or crushed by slapping, causing a local skin inflammatory reaction. A mild burning sensation will occur within a few minutes, and multiple blisters will develop within a day, often arranged in a line. These beetles live in the woods, grass, or under rocks, and are nocturnal. They are phototropic and fly mostly under lights at night. They can be seen all over the world.
