Trichomoniasis:
In the Female: One-day treatment − Seven-day course of treatment − The dosage regimen should be individualized. Single-dose treatment can assure compliance, especially if administered under supervision, in those patients who cannot be relied on to continue the seven-day regimen. A seven-day course of treatment may minimize reinfection by protecting the patient long enough for the sexual contacts to obtain appropriate treatment. Further, some patients may tolerate one treatment regimen better than the other. Pregnant patients should not be treated during the first trimester (see CONTRAINDICATIONS PRECAUTIONS, Pregnancy When repeat courses of the drug are required, it is recommended that an interval of four to six weeks elapse between courses and that the presence of the trichomonad be reconfirmed by appropriate laboratory measures. Total and differential leukocyte counts should be made before and after re-treatment. In the Male: Treatment should be individualized as it is for the female.
Amebiasis
Adults: For acute intestinal amebiasis (acute amebic dysentery): For amebic liver abscess: Pediatric patients
Anaerobic Bacterial Infections
In the treatment of most serious anaerobic infections, intravenous metronidazole is usually administered initially. The usual adult oral dosage is 7.5 mg/kg every six hours (approx. 500 mg for a 70-kg adult). A maximum of 4 g should not be exceeded during a 24-hour period. The usual duration of therapy is 7 to 10 days; however, infections of the bone and joint, lower respiratory tract, and endocardium may require longer treatment.

It also serves as a convenient dosage form when small parenteral doses of the antibiotic are required. Note: Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP is not to be used as a diluent when the product will be used in newborns. For Direct Intravenous Use Add 5 mL Sterile Water for Injection, USP, or Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP to the 125 mg, 250 mg, and 500 mg vials and administer slowly over a 3 to 5 minute period. Ampicillin for Injection, USP 1 g or 2 g, may also be given by direct intravenous administration. Dissolve in 7.4 or 14.8 mL Sterile Water for Injection, USP, or Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP, respectively, and administer slowly over at least 10 to 15 minutes. Indication: Cefazolin for Injection, USP is indicated for the treatment of the following serious infections due to susceptible organisms: Respiratory Tract Infections: S. pneumoniae, Klebsiella , H. influenzae, S. aureus Injectable benzathine penicillin is considered the drug of choice in treatment and prevention of streptococcal infections, including the prophylaxis of rheumatic fever. Cefazolin for Injection, USP is effective in the eradication of streptococci from the nasopharynx; however, data establishing the efficacy of Cefazolin for Injection, USP in the subsequent prevention of rheumatic fever are not available at present. Urinary Tract Infections: E. coli, P. mirabilis, Klebsiella Skin and Skin Structure Infections: S. aureus Biliary Tract Infections: E. coli P. mirabilis Klebsiella S. aureus Bone and Joint Infections: S. aureus Genital Infections: E. coli P. mirabilis Klebsiella Septicemia: S. pneumoniae S. aureus P. mirabilis E. coli Klebsiella Endocarditis: S. aureus Perioperative Prophylaxis: The perioperative use of Cefazolin for Injection, USP may also be effective in surgical patients in whom infection at the operative site would present a serious risk (e.g., during open‑heart surgery and prosthetic arthroplasty). The prophylactic administration of Cefazolin for Injection, USP should usually be discontinued within a 24‑hour period after the surgical procedure. In surgery where the occurrence of infection may be particularly devastating (e.g., open-heart surgery and prosthetic arthroplasty), the prophylactic administration of Cefazolin for Injection, USP may be continued for 3 to 5 days following the completion of surgery. If there are signs of infection, specimens for cultures should be obtained for the identification of the causative organism so that appropriate therapy may be instituted. (See DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION.) To reduce the development of drug‑resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of Cefazolin for Injection, USP and other antibacterial drugs, Cefazolin for Injection, USP should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy.
Symptomatic Trichomoniasis
Metronidazole tablets are indicated for the treatment of T. vaginalis
Asymptomatic Trichomoniasis
Metronidazole tablets are indicated in the treatment of asymptomatic T. vaginalis
Treatment of Asymptomatic Sexual Partners
T. vaginalis
Amebiasis
Metronidazole tablets are indicated in the treatment of acute intestinal amebiasis (amebic dysentery) and amebic liver abscess. In amebic liver abscess, metronidazole tablets therapy does not obviate the need for aspiration or drainage of pus.
Anaerobic Bacterial Infections
Metronidazole tablets are indicated in the treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria. Indicated surgical procedures should be performed in conjunction with metronidazole tablets therapy. In a mixed aerobic and anaerobic infection, antimicrobials appropriate for the treatment of the aerobic infection should be used in addition to metronidazole tablets.
