Hypercalcemia
Hypercalcemia refers to an abnormal increase in serum ionized calcium concentration. When the amount of calcium entering the extracellular fluid (intestines, bones) exceeds the amount of calcium excreted (intestines, kidneys), hypercalcemia occurs, and the blood calcium concentration is higher than 2.75mmol/L. There are two major causes of hypercalcemia: PTH-dependent and PTH-independent hypercalcemia. It is generally believed that when serum calcium is above 3.75mmol/L, hypercalcemic crisis may occur, which is life-threatening if not properly handled and is a clinical emergency.
