Secondary thrombocythemia in children
Clinically, in certain physiological states (such as after exercise) and different types of acute and chronic diseases, the platelet count may rise to more than 400×109/L, which is called secondary (reactive) thrombocythemia. The cause can be determined from the medical history and clinical manifestations. Thrombocytosis refers to the platelet count exceeding the upper limit of the normal value. The platelet count often exceeds 1000×109/L (1 million/mm3) and can reach 14000×109/L (14 million/mm3). The platelet size is abnormal and giant, which is extremely rare in children. Mucosal bleeding is the main symptom, such as hematuria, gastrointestinal bleeding, and epistaxis.
