Atherosclerotic occlusive disease
Arteriosclerosis obliterans is a local manifestation of systemic atherosclerosis in the limbs. It is a degenerative and proliferative change in the intima and middle layer of systemic arteries, which makes the blood vessel wall harden, shrink, and lose elasticity, thus causing secondary thrombosis, resulting in progressive reduction or interruption of distal blood flow. It can occur in major arteries throughout the body, and is more common in the lower end of the abdominal aorta and the large and medium arteries of the lower limbs. The occurrence of the abdominal aorta and the two common iliac arteries below the renal arteries is called Leriche syndrome.
