Acute appendicitis during pregnancy
In the middle and late stages of pregnancy, due to the enlargement of the uterus, the position of the cecum and appendix shifts upward and backward. At 3 months of pregnancy, the root of the appendix is approximately two horizontal fingers below the iliac crest; at 5 months, it is at the same height as the iliac crest; at 8 months, it rises to two horizontal fingers above the iliac crest; and returns to its original position 10 days after delivery. During this position change, the appendix also rotates, so acute appendicitis during pregnancy has special manifestations.
