Herpes simplex viral infection of newborn is caused by herpes simplex virus, which is a double-stranded DNA virus and can be divided into two types. Type I mainly causes herpes on the lips, perioral area, gums and pharyngeal skin and mucous membranes; type II causes genital herpes. Newborn HSV infection is mostly caused by type II and occasionally by type I. HSV has the characteristics of long-term latency, repeated attacks and tropism for neural tissue; systemic infection is more common in premature infants, with lesions involving multiple organs and a serious prognosis.
