Central retinal artery occlusion
The central retinal artery is the only source of nutrition for the inner layer of the retina. Since this artery is a terminal artery and there is no anastomosis between its branches, once blocked, the blood supply to the inner layer of the retina is interrupted, causing acute ischemia and acute visual impairment. The disease develops rapidly. Most cases occur in one eye, but the other eye may also be affected after a few days or years. Most patients are over 40 years old. There is no significant difference in gender.
