Barrett syndrome
Barrett syndrome refers to the replacement of the lower esophageal mucosa by gastric columnar epithelium. It is also known as Barrett's ulcer, chronic peptic ulcer and esophagitis syndrome. It was first described by Barrett in 1950, so it is called Barrett syndrome. This syndrome can be congenital, but it is often secondary to reflux esophagitis, and esophagitis and ulcers occur on the basis of gastroesophageal reflux.
