Alcoholic brain atrophy
Alcoholic cerebral atrophy refers to the irreversible reduction of brain tissue caused by chronic alcohol consumption. There is controversy over whether this disease constitutes an independent clinical pathological disease. Some authors believe that alcoholic cerebral atrophy is a pathological concept, and this term originated from the study of brain angiography. It specifically refers to relatively young alcoholics with or without clinical symptoms of brain lesions. Brain angiography shows enlargement of the lateral ventricles and widening of the frontal lobe sulci. Modern imaging has corresponding findings. The mechanism of its occurrence is unknown, and it may be related to direct damage to the brain by alcohol and nutritional disorders, especially the lack of vitamin B1. It is more common in middle-aged and elderly men who drink a lot for a long time. The onset is hidden and progresses slowly. In the early stage, there is often anxiety, headache, insomnia, fatigue, etc. Intellectual decline and personality changes gradually appear. In addition, some patients may also have peripheral neuropathy, muscle atrophy, and even tremors, hallucinations, delusions, and epileptic seizures, which are manifestations of severe alcohol poisoning. Head CT showed symmetrical enlargement of the lateral ventricles, widening of the cerebral sulci, interhemispheric fissures and lateral fissures, and other manifestations of brain atrophy.
