Paraneoplastic syndromes of the nervous system
Paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS) are diseases that occur in patients with certain malignant tumors and affect distant organs without tumor metastasis, causing functional disorders. If the affected distant organs are in the nervous system, it is also called neurologic paraneoplastic syndrome. It is not a group of symptoms caused by direct invasion of the tissue or organ by the tumor, but a remote effect of systemic cancer, such as lung cancer and ovarian cancer, which can manifest as gray matter inflammation and neurodegeneration in the central nervous system. The clinical manifestations caused by the damage caused by paraneoplastic syndrome appear earlier than the tumor itself and are more serious.
