Phacolytic glaucoma
Inflammatory glaucoma caused by lens protein leaking through the lens capsule when a mature or overmature cataract occurs is called phacolytic glaucoma or lens protein glaucoma, which is a secondary open-angle glaucoma. Due to changes in the protein composition of the lens in the elderly, high molecular weight lens protein increases, and mature or overmature cataracts release lens protein through the tiny openings of the lens capsule. Due to the inflammatory reaction of protein deposits, the anterior chamber is filled with phagocytes that have engulfed lens material and inflammatory debris that block the trabecular meshwork, causing increased intraocular pressure and leading to secondary glaucoma. Modern laboratory research results have a better understanding of its pathogenesis and clinical classification. Flocks first proposed the name of phacolytic glaucoma in 1955.
