Hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma
Hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare hepatic vascular tumor that was first described by Weiss and Ensinger as a superficial or deep soft tissue endothelial cell tumor. Similar tumors in the lung were originally called hemangioendothelial bronchoalveolar tumors. It was first thought to be a metastatic tumor in the liver, but it was not until later that Ishak discovered that it was a primary tumor of the liver. The tumor grows slowly and the prognosis is variable. Biologically, it is a borderline tumor, between benign hemangiomas and malignant angiosarcomas. There is no history of exposure to toxic substances or hepatitis virus infection. It is not accompanied by cirrhosis and metastases are often present at the time of initial diagnosis.
