Patency of Eustachian tube
The pharyngeal opening of the Eustachian tube is normally closed and only opens momentarily for gas exchange in the tympanic cavity when swallowing, yawning, opening the mouth wide, and blowing the nose. If the pharyngeal opening muscles are paralyzed or atrophied, the pharyngeal opening may be often open and cause symptoms, which is called abnormal patency of the Eustachian tube.
