Newborn rickets
Newborn rickets is a nutritional metabolic bone disease characterized by calcium and phosphorus metabolism disorder caused by vitamin D and/or calcium and phosphorus deficiency, and excessive accumulation of calcium salts in the growing bone matrix and/or osteoid tissue (uncalcified bone matrix). If the disease occurs at birth, it is called congenital rickets (CR), also known as fetal rickets, viviparous rickets, etc. Newborn rickets are prone to hypocalcemic spasms. Since laryngeal spasms can be life-threatening or cause hypoxic brain damage, they should be actively prevented and treated. Newborn rickets are not uncommon in China, especially in Northeast China and North China, where the sunshine time is short and the cold season is long. The incidence rate can reach 10% to 32.9%. According to foreign statistics, the incidence rate of rickets in premature infants can be as high as 33% or more. The incidence rate of newborns born in spring and summer is significantly higher than that in autumn and winter, which can be as high as 40% to 90%. It is reported that the incidence rate of congenital rickets in babies born to pregnant women of the white-collar class is increasing.
