Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea
The hypothalamus is an important organ of reproduction. It regulates the function of the pituitary gland through nerve conduction and the pituitary-portal system, causing the pituitary gland to secrete corresponding hormones. These hormones act on the ovaries to produce steroid hormones to ensure the normal maintenance of reproductive function. The function of the hypothalamus is stimulated by central nervous cells on the one hand to regulate the secretion of pituitary-stimulating hormones; on the other hand, it is regulated by negative feedback from hormones secreted by the pituitary gland. The neuroendocrine cells in the arcuate nucleus of the central protuberance of the hypothalamus release GnRH in a pulsed manner. Mental stress, strenuous exercise, hypothalamic tumors, etc. can all cause abnormal secretion of GnRH, leading to anovulation and amenorrhea.
