Orbital schwannoma
Neurosheath tumors are benign tumors that occur in the sheath cells of nerve axons. They are often found in cranial nerves and peripheral nerve roots, limbs, and the head and neck. The sheath cells are also called Schwann’s cells, and neurosheath tumors were once called Schwannoma. The orbit contains abundant nerve tissue, including the motor nerves that supply the extraocular muscles, the sympathetic nerves, the parasympathetic nerves, the sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve, and a few branches of the maxillary nerve, so neurosheath tumors are also common. Most orbital peripheral nerve tumors originate from sensory nerves, and patients often feel pain, but after tumor resection, the movement of the extraocular muscles and other non-sensory nerve functions are normal. The optic nerve belongs to the central nervous system and does not contain sheath cells. Neurosheath tumors do not occur in the optic nerve fibers, but the meninges around the optic nerve contain components of the ophthalmic nerve and sympathetic nerves, and neural tumors can occur, but they are very rare. Intraorbital neurosheath tumors often occur in the sensory nerve trunk and its small branches. Schwannomas account for about 3% of orbital tumors. Most orbital schwannomas occur alone, and a few are combined with neurofibromatosis. Tumors often occur above and outside the orbit.
