Sertraline is a potent and specific inhibitor of 5-HT reuptake in neurons in vitro, which can lead to an enhancement of 5-HT effects in animals. Sertraline has only a very slight effect on the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine in neurons. At clinical doses, sertraline blocks the uptake of 5-HT by human platelets. In animals, sertraline has no central excitatory, sedative, anticholinergic, or cardiotoxic effects.
