Acetylcysteine Granules
Function and Efficacy
The active ingredient of this product is N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), which has a strong mucolytic effect by breaking down mucin complexes, nucleic acids, and changing the purulent components of sputum and other mucus and mucous secretions from viscous to thin. In addition, this product has a direct antioxidant effect through a free sulfhydryl group (nucleophilic -SH) that can directly react with electrophilic oxidizing groups. This product can protect alpha-1 antitrypsin (elastase inhibitor) from inactivation by hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Hypochlorous acid is a strong oxidant produced by myeloperoxidase in activated phagocytes. These properties make this product particularly suitable for the treatment of acute and chronic respiratory infections characterized by thick mucus and viscous secretions. In addition, this product's molecular structure makes it easy to penetrate cell membranes. Inside the cell, this product loses acetyl to form L-cysteine, an essential amino acid for the synthesis of glutathione (GSH). GSH is a highly active tripeptide widely present in various animal tissues. Glutathione is the most important protective agent in cells and is necessary to maintain the integrity of cell function and cell morphology. It prevents cells from being damaged by oxygen free radicals and various cytotoxic substances in and outside the body. This product plays an important role in maintaining appropriate GSH levels, thereby helping to protect cells from cytotoxic damage caused by low GSH levels in the body, such as in the case of acetaminophen poisoning. Due to this mechanism of action, this product can also be used as a special antidote in acetaminophen poisoning, in cyclophosphamide treatment, and in hemorrhagic cystitis (in the latter case, this product provides the necessary sulfhydryl group to inactivate acrolein without interfering with chemotherapy. Acrolein is a toxic metabolite that affects the urinary tract mucosa). Acute toxicity: The acute toxicity of oral, intraperitoneal or intravenous acetylcysteine is low. The LD50 of a single oral dose in normally fed rats and mice is 10g and 8g/kg respectively, and the intravenous dose is 2.8g/kg for rats and 4.6g for mice. Long-term toxicity: In repeated dosing studies, rats were orally administered 1g/kg/day for 12 weeks and 6 months and tolerated well. Dogs were orally administered 300mg/kg/day for one year and no toxic reactions were observed. Reproductive toxicity study: It was observed that rats and rabbits had no teratogenic effect on the organ development of their offspring after taking high doses of acetylcysteine during pregnancy. Mutagenicity study: Acetylcysteine has no mutagenic effect
Ingredients
Acetylcysteine
Appearance
This product is orange-yellow fine granules; it tastes sweet.
Indication
This product is a sputum dissolving agent, suitable for the difficulty of expectoration caused by thick sputum, and sticky sputum that is difficult to expectorate. It can break the disulfide bonds in the glycoprotein polypeptide chains in the sputum, reduce the viscosity of the sputum, and liquefy it so that it is easy to expectorate.
Usage and Dosage
Before use, add a small amount of warm water to dissolve, mix well and take, or take orally directly. Adults: Oral, 0.2g (as acetylcysteine) three times a day. Children: Oral, 0.1g (as acetylcysteine) two to four times a day, increase or decrease according to age.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic reactions such as urticaria and rare bronchospasm may occur with oral administration of this product. Gastrointestinal irritation such as nausea and vomiting may occur during oral administration.
