Function and Efficacy

Ampicillin is stable to gastric acid, has good oral absorption, and is well distributed after absorption. The drug concentration in bile and urine is high, and effective therapeutic concentrations can be achieved in inflammatory cerebrospinal fluid, pleural effusion, joint effusion, and bronchial secretion fluid. The blood elimination half-life (t1/2β) is 1 to 1.5 hours. The plasma protein binding rate is 20%. The amount excreted in urine 24 hours after oral administration accounts for 20% to 60% of the dose, and most of it is excreted in its original form.

Appearance

The content of this product is white or off-white powder with a slightly bitter taste.

Indication

Used for respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, digestive tract infections, ear, nose and throat infections, skin and soft tissue infections caused by sensitive pathogens.

Usage and Dosage

Adults: 0.25-0.75 g (1-3 tablets) 4 times a day. Children: 25 mg/kg per day, 2-4 times a day.

Adverse Reactions

1. The adverse reactions of this product are similar to those of penicillin, with allergic reactions being more common. Rash is the most common reaction, which usually occurs 5 days after medication, in the form of urticaria or maculopapular rash; interstitial nephritis may also occur; anaphylactic shock is occasionally seen. 2. Gastrointestinal reactions such as glossitis, gastritis, nausea, vomiting, enteritis, diarrhea, and mild abdominal pain are also common. 3. Granulocytopenia and thrombocytopenia are occasionally seen in patients taking ampicillin. Antibiotic-related enteritis is rare, and a few patients have elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT).

Precautions

1. Patients who are allergic to penicillins or cephalosporins or have a positive penicillin skin test are contraindicated. 2. Patients with uric acid kidney stones or acute gout attacks are contraindicated. 3. Patients with active gastrointestinal ulcers are contraindicated.

Special Population Medication

Precautions for children: It is forbidden to use in children under 2 years old. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: There are no strict controlled trials for the use of ampicillin in pregnant women, so pregnant women should use this product only when it is necessary. A small amount of ampicillin can be secreted from breast milk, so breastfeeding should be suspended when breastfeeding women take the drug. Precautions for the elderly: Due to the decline of physiological renal function, the dosage should be appropriately reduced.

Drug Interactions

1. Combination with probenecid will prolong the half-life of this product. 2. Ampicillin and kanamycin have synergistic antibacterial effects against Escherichia coli and Proteus. 3. Allopurinol can increase the incidence of ampicillin rash reactions, especially in hyperuricemia. 4. Ampicillin can stimulate estrogen metabolism or reduce its enterohepatic circulation, thereby reducing the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
