Citalopram Hydrobromide Tablets

Function and Efficacy

Citalopram hydrobromide is a strong and selective 5-HT uptake inhibitor with antidepressant effects. Of particular interest is that this drug has no inhibitory effect on cholinergic muscarinic receptors, histamine receptors and alpha-adrenergic receptors. If these receptors are inhibited, many side effects caused by antidepressants will occur, such as dry mouth, sedation, postural hypotension, etc. Citalopram hydrobromide is equally effective in patients with endogenous and non-endogenous depression. Its antidepressant effect is usually established after 2-4 weeks. Citalopram hydrobromide does not affect the cardiac conduction system and blood pressure. This is particularly important for elderly patients. In addition, Citalopram hydrobromide does not affect the blood, liver, and kidney systems. The rare side effects and minimal sedation of Citalopram hydrobromide make it particularly suitable for long-term treatment. In addition, Citalopram hydrobromide does not cause weight gain and does not enhance the effects of alcohol.

Indication

Depressive disorders (endogenous and non-endogenous depression).

Usage and Dosage

Adults: Take Citalopram Hydrobromide Tablets once daily. The starting dose is 1 tablet (20 mg) per day. If clinically necessary, it can be increased to 2 tablets (40 mg) per day or the highest dose is 3 tablets (60 mg) per day. For patients over 65 years old, the dose is halved, that is, 0.5-1.5 tablets (10-30 mg) per day. Antidepressant treatment is symptomatic treatment and must be continued for an appropriate period of time. Generally, it takes 4-6 months for manic-depressive mental disorders. If insomnia or severe akathisia occurs, sedative treatment is recommended in the acute phase.

Adverse Reactions

The side effects observed with citalopram hydrobromide are usually few, mild and transient. The most common adverse reactions are: nausea, increased sweating, decreased salivation, headache and decreased sleep time. They are usually more obvious in the first or second week of treatment and generally disappear gradually as the depressive state improves. Seizures have been observed in rare cases. In patients with pre-existing bradycardia, bradycardia can complicate treatment.

Precautions

It is contraindicated to use in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors; it is contraindicated for those who are allergic to this product and/or any of its ingredients.

Special Population Medication

Precautions for children: Depressants are not suitable for children and adolescents under 18 years of age. In clinical trials of children and adolescents under 18 years of age, it was found that the frequency of suicide-related behaviors (suicidal attempts and suicidal ideas) and hostility (aggression, confrontational behavior and irritability) in the group of this product was higher than that in the placebo group. Even for clinical trials, patients' suicidal behavior still needs to be closely monitored. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: The safety of Citalopram during human pregnancy has not been determined. Therefore, unless the benefits to the patient far outweigh the theoretical risks to the fetus or infant, it should not be taken during pregnancy and lactation. Precautions for the elderly: For patients over 65 years of age, the maximum daily dose is 40 mg.

Drug Interactions

Concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors may result in hypertensive crisis.
