In the process of melanin production, tyrosinase is the rate-limiting enzyme that regulates melanin production. At present, conventional whitening products achieve whitening effects by inhibiting tyrosinase activity, such as arbutin, kojic acid, vitamin C, phenylethyl resorcinol, etc.

Aminoethyl phosphinic acid is a whitening agent that takes a different approach. Aminoethyl phosphinic acid is a dopachrome stabilizer that can inhibit dopachrome from undergoing the next reaction to generate 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) and 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA), thereby inhibiting the production of melanin.
