Introduction

Edaravone is a new type of free radical scavenger. It was first launched in Japan in April 2001 and is mainly used clinically to treat ischemic stroke. Edaravone exists in the form of anions and can donate one electron to free radicals to achieve the purpose of scavenging free radicals. Because its molecular structure contains lipophilic groups, it can easily pass through the blood-brain barrier to reach the brain tissue, and has a protective effect on nerve cell damage caused by cerebral ischemia.

Mechanism of action

The main mechanisms of action of edaravone on nerve cells include scavenging oxygen free radicals to inhibit lipid peroxidation, regulating inflammatory factors, and inhibiting cell apoptosis. With the in-depth study of edaravone, it was found that in addition to treating acute cerebral ischemia, edaravone has a therapeutic effect on other diseases of the nervous system that involve oxidative stress. In addition, edaravone also has a protective effect on other organs outside the nervous system. Edaravone is currently mainly used to treat ischemic stroke, and its clinical application in other aspects is relatively small.

Indications

It is suitable for improving neurological symptoms, daily living activities and functional disorders caused by acute cerebral infarction. Drug Interactions: Combination with cefazolin, piperacillin, cefotiam, etc. may aggravate renal failure. Mixing with potassium canrenoate or anti-epileptic drugs such as diazepam and phenytoin sodium may produce turbidity.
