    Description

Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid with antioxidative, anticancer, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective properties. It scavenges 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and decreases the viability of MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells. It prevents left ventricular dysfunction in late-stage Duchenne muscular dystrophy and prevents neurotoxicity induced by amyloid-β (Aβ) or the glutamate receptor agonists glutamate, NMDA --- an effect that can be blocked by the GABAA receptor antagonist picrotoxin.

    Taurine More Info

    Properties

Taurine is a white, crystalline powder. It is odorless and has a slightly acidic taste. It is highly soluble in water, which enables it to be easily transported and distributed in the aqueous environment of the body.

    Occurrence

In Nature: Taurine is widely distributed in nature. It is particularly abundant in animal tissues, especially in the heart, brain, retina, and skeletal muscles. In the marine environment, it is found in high concentrations in many marine organisms such as fish and shellfish.

In Diet: It is an important component of many animal-based foods. Foods rich in taurine include meat, fish (such as tuna, salmon), and dairy products. However, plant-based foods generally contain very little or no taurine.

    Physiological Functions

Osmoregulation: Taurine helps maintain the balance of water and electrolytes in cells. It adjusts the osmotic pressure inside and outside cells, ensuring that cells maintain their normal shape and function. This is particularly important in tissues that are constantly exposed to changes in fluid balance, such as the kidneys and the eye.

Antioxidant Activity: Taurine has antioxidant properties. It can scavenge free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress and protecting cells from damage caused by reactive oxygen species. This helps to prevent various diseases related to oxidative damage, such as cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative diseases.

Neurotransmitter Regulation: In the central nervous system, taurine acts as a neuromodulator or neurotransmitter. It is involved in the regulation of nerve cell excitability and synaptic transmission. Taurine is important for the development and function of the brain, and it may play a role in preventing neurological disorders such as epilepsy and anxiety.

Bile Acid Conjugation: Taurine combines with bile acids in the liver to form taurocholic acid and other conjugated bile acids. These conjugated bile acids are essential for the digestion and absorption of fats in the small intestine. They help emulsify fats, making it easier for lipases to break them down into fatty acids and glycerol for absorption.

    Applications

Pharmaceuticals: Taurine is used in the treatment of certain medical conditions. It is sometimes prescribed for patients with heart failure, as it may help improve cardiac function. It is also used in the treatment of some liver diseases and cystic fibrosis.

Food Additives: Taurine is a common ingredient in energy drinks. It is added to these beverages because of its potential to enhance physical performance and mental alertness. It is also used in some infant formulas, as taurine is important for the development of infants, especially for their brain and eye development.

Animal Feed: Taurine is an important additive in animal feed, especially for cats. Cats are unable to synthesize sufficient amounts of taurine on their own and rely on dietary sources to meet their needs. Lack of taurine in cat food can lead to serious health problems, including vision loss and heart disease.
