    Paromomycin sulfate More Info

Paromomycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that is poorly absorbed when taken orally. It works by binding to the 30S ribosomal RNA and inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible organisms.

    Uses

Intestinal Amebiasis: It is commonly used to treat both acute and chronic intestinal amebiasis, a parasitic infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. The typical dosage is 25–35 mg/kg daily, divided into three doses, for 5–10 days.

Hepatic Coma: Paromomycin is also used in combination with other medicines to help reduce the symptoms of hepatic coma, a complication of liver disease. The usual dosage for adults is 4000 mg per day, divided into smaller doses, for 5–6 days.

Other Parasitic Infections: It has been used to treat infections caused by Giardia lamblia and Dientamoeba fragilis, with varying degrees of efficacy. Additionally, it has been suggested for the treatment of Cryptosporidium infections in HIV patients, although its effectiveness in this context is not well-established.

    Administration

Paromomycin sulfate is available in capsule form and should be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor. It is best taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. The medicine works best when there is a constant amount in the blood, so it is important to take it on a regular schedule.

    Side Effects

Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. These side effects may subside as the body adjusts to the medication. In rare cases, systemic administration can lead to ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. However, since paromomycin is poorly absorbed, these systemic side effects are less common with oral administration.

    Precautions

Regular medical check-ups are important to monitor the progress of treatment and to ensure the medicine is working properly. If symptoms do not improve within a few days or worsen, patients should consult their doctor. Paromomycin sulfate is contraindicated in individuals with renal failure due to the risk of nephrotoxicity.
