【Extraction Source】Ergosterol is an important plant sterol (see steroidal compounds) and a steroidal compound. It exists in yeast and ergot.

【Physical and Chemical Properties】White flaky fluffy powder. It is easily oxidized to yellow when exposed to sunlight and air. Soluble in benzene and chloroform. 1g of the product dissolves in 660ml of cold ethanol, 45ml of boiling ethanol, 70ml of cold ether, 39ml of boiling ether, 31ml of chloroform, and almost insoluble in water. It can be precipitated by digitonin. Specific rotation [α]D －135° (chloroform, C=1.2). *Absorption wavelengths (in ethanol) 262, 271, 282, 293nm. When ergosterol is irradiated with ultraviolet light, a series of changes occur to generate vitamin D2; the derivative of ergosterol, 22,23-dihydroergosterol, is converted to vitamin D4 after ultraviolet irradiation. Used for research. It has the effect of vitamin D2. Specific rotation －135° (C=1.2, in chloroform).
