Core Characteristics: 

1. Physical Properties
At standard temperature and pressure, it is a colorless, transparent liquid that is miscible with water, ethanol, chloroform, and diethyl ether.
2. Chemical Properties
(1) Acidic Reactions: It reacts with strong bases and carbonates to form neutralization products; it corrodes most metals, releasing hydrogen gas.
(2) Substitution Reactions: The hydroxyl group on the carboxyl group can be substituted to form derivatives such as propanoic anhydride, propionyl chloride, and propionate esters.
(3) Reduction Reactions: Difficult to reduce by conventional methods; can only be reduced to n-propanol by lithium aluminum hydride.
(4) Stability: Stable; must be stored separately from strong oxidizing agents and strong bases.
3. Main Applications
(1) Food and Feed Industry: Processed into sodium propionate or calcium propionate, it serves as a preservative and is widely used in bread, pastries, and animal feed to prevent mold growth, maintain freshness, and extend shelf life.
(2) Organic Chemical Industry: Commonly used as a solvent for nitrocellulose and a plasticizer; it also serves as a raw material for synthesizing propionate esters, propionate salts, pesticide herbicides, and pharmaceutical intermediates. Propionate esters can be formulated into fruit-flavored fragrances.
(3) Electroplating and Surface Treatment: It can be used as a zinc plating buffer and a semi-bright nickel plating additive to enhance the adhesion of the passivation film.
(4) Other Applications: It serves as a foam inhibitor in beer production, a hair-nourishing and anti-dandruff agent in cosmetics, and a pH adjuster and solvent in the pharmaceutical industry.
